Πρόσφατες μελέτες έχουν θέσει υπό αμφισβήτηση την ανταγωνιστικότητα των γεωργικών συνεταιρισμών σε ένα βιομηχανοποιημένο σύστημα τροφίμων, με βάση τα εμπειρικά αποτελέσματα και την οικονομική θεωρία. Οι νέες οργανωτικές ιδρύματα έχουν προταθεί για να ξεπεραστούν οι συνεταιριστικές κύριες αδυναμίες (τα λεγόμενα νέα συνεταιρισμούς γενιάς). Στο έγγραφο αυτό, παρέχουμε ένα απλό μοντέλο που βασίζεται σε μια οικονομική προσέγγιση για την αντιμετώπιση του ζητήματος της ανταγωνιστικότητας συνεταιρισμού και να αξιολογήσει την αποδοτικότητα των επενδύσεων και των δύο παραδοσιακών και νέων συνεταιρισμών γενιάς. Τα κύρια συμπεράσματα της ανάλυσης είναι: i) οι συνεταιρισμοί (τόσο των παραδοσιακών και νέων γενιάς) μπορεί να έχει κίνητρο να υιοθετήσει τα σχέδια που δεν μεγιστοποιήσουν την καθαρή παρούσα αξία της επιχείρησης ii) τα όργανα των νέων συνεταιρισμών γενιά δεν επαρκούν για να εξασφαλιστεί καθαρό παρούσα αξία μεγιστοποίηση, ακόμα κι αν αντιμετωπίσει ορισμένες από τις βασικές ανησυχίες των παραδοσιακών συνεταιρισμών iii) παραδοσιακά οι συνεταιρισμοί μπορούν να έχουν ένα ανταγωνιστικό πλεονέκτημα στις επιχειρήσεις που απαιτούν τη συνάθροιση μεγάλου αριθμού αγροτών.
